How to: Galaxy Print

Galaxy print is popping up everywhere these days, and it’s really easy to do yourself. You don’t need to be a fantastic artist to do it, it’s just about dabbing and mixing paint around. Were you good at finger painting as a kid? Yes? Great… You’ll be good at this.

What you will need:

- A garment of choice
- Paint brushes
- Sponges
- Fabric paint (I used Pebeo Setacolor Opaque fabric paints from Gordon Harris).
- A clean surface with a cover on it.
- A plate for mixing colours
- Sellotape

How to:

Prepare what you are going to paint, use Sellotape to mark any lines you do not wish to paint. I wanted a clean line on my dress, with only the back painted, so taped where the stitching was.

Step 1: Start with your darkest colour and dot this around. You want to blend this using a sponge as you want to cover as much area as possible. I used Pebeo Shimmer Jet Black (79) here as it comes out a dark navy/purple. Tip: You don’t have to cover the whole thing here, some bits can stay black.

Step 2: Start blending your blue in now with the same technique. I used Pebeo Oriental Blue (56) here and later mixed it with my white for lighter bits. Blend your lighter bits over some of your original blue. You can add any extra white on as little stars, but only a few at this point. Tip: Don’t stress too much about making it perfect here, it is meant to be messy and different. Switch up the direction you blend, dot and swipe paint.

Step 3: Start adding your red in here. I mixed my red (Pebeo Vermilion (26)) with some of the Black Shimmer first, and dabbed this on, then dabbed my red straight on and mixed some yellow with it also to make orange. I used my orange as the centre of some of my galaxies I was forming. Tip: Don’t worry about blending this too much now, as you’re wanting to form small clusters.

Step 4: Here you can get creative. Dab your yellow on (Pebeo Buttercup (13)) here and there, mix it in with the clusters, splatter it on, or swipe it randomly. Get some pink out (Pebeo Oriental Red (64 Shimmer) and do the same, I mixed most of mine with my orange clusters for depth. And dot around your white a bit more; I used Pebeo Shimmer Pearl (44). Dot this around for stars, or splodge it in the middle of your clusters. Tip: Google galaxy prints and go off them for inspiration.
