Created by Eyebrow Queen herself, Phoenix Renata, Phoenix Cosmetics has been going strong since it first opened in 2005. It now has nine boutiques in New Zealand and one in Australia – Woah!

We went to check it out and were not disappointed. Let us tell you why…

The Design:

It was POURING DOWN the evening we went in, but as soon as the door opened, we were welcomed with pink decor, warm dry air, and a lovely smile or two. If you get the opportunity to visit one of the stores, do! Apart from the fact they provide fantastic services and really teach you how to apply makeup for your face, you actually get treated to an atmosphere that feels girly, sophisticated, and warming inside and out.

The Ladies:

Every lady working there is a trained makeup artist, so you can trust in their judgement and expertise. Phoenix only hire the best! We had the pleasure of meeting Kristy from Kingsland who was a great example of the brand’s ethos. She was stunning for one, so involved, bubbly, educated, and truly, TRULY believed in the products. 

The Product: 

We’re going to go more into detail in another post (it’s that good) but just check out their range! From Primer to Brow Shadow, Pixie Shimmer to Supergloss. The products come in all textures and shades under the sun and the ladies show you what suits, and exactly how to achieve it.

The Service: 

We went for a Makeover and were treated to a little pin-up tutorial. This service was amazing as it allowed us to try the product up close and personal – quite literally. Makeovers help you to learn exactly what suits your face, tricks and techniques to applying, and make you walk away feeling refreshed and pretty damn hot. We had heaps of confidence walking out, and wanted to put on heels and paint the town red (sadly that rain didn’t agree).

CLASH Boutique is a NZ owned street wear store that is leading the way for the rise of kiwi fashion videography with the recent release of their own promotional fashion video featuring prominent NZ musicians and talent.

Fashion videography is a relatively recent trend – an exciting development in the ever changing face of fashion imagery that is one part music video, one part short film, and one part moving editorial. It is an exciting and interactive way for brands to connect with their target audiences and communicate their aesthetics, ethos, and seasonal looks in a medium that transcends the limitations of still imagery.

The trend is slowly making its way to NZ shores with the newly focused Glassons highlighting the power of the film medium with a stream of videos being released for both their Valentines Day and Easter Promotions. Auckland based street wear store CLASH Boutique is the most recent NZ brand to get in on the action and is leading the way for smaller NZ owned stores to also take advantage of the ever growing medium.

Produced by NZ filmmaker James Atkins and actor/model Kat Glass of Auckland production company Atkins Media, CLASH’s new promotional video is an excellent example of how fashion videography can encapsulate and communicate the energy and vivacity of a label or brand to their online audiences.

The video – inspired by CLASH owner/operator Nick Paulson’s love of underground movements, street art, and punk music – takes CLASH’s gritty, urban, and confident aesthetic and conveys it in a music video style promotion that nods heavily to iconic punk imagery.

Original music was composed and performed for the video by talented NZ musicians Jesse Sheehan (prominent solo artist, prior member of The Electric Confectionaires, and first solo artist to ever win the annual Smokefree Rockquest), Chris Horry (energetic frontman of the youthful metal band Jurassic Penguin as well as ambient alternative band Blackcrosses), and Carlie Dyer (drummer/guitarist of all girl ensemble Hello Riley and drummer/singer of Tiny Tantrums).

In a tip off to the three-chord tunes that defined the late 70s, the track is a catchy and gritty backdrop for a tight and lively video that references various album covers of eponymous band The Clash (including a memorable scene recreating the famous guitar smashing imagery of ‘London Calling’).

The video heralds the beginning of what promises to be a flood of kiwi labels taking advantage of alternative promotional forums to increase their online presence.

Sydney is such a social town, always up and running, always bright, and always looking good. Living in Sydney would be very easy for me! Now I went with the intention to shop, but as luck goes I couldn’t find much. This is not an understatement. Maybe I’m too used to online shopping now and really hunting for a good bargain, but I just couldn’t find anything… Apart from one thing, and boy am I in love.

This hat is amazing and yes, it has ears! Purchased from Sportsgirl for $29.95AUS – you can find all their accessories here – this hat sums up my style completely. It’s smart, a little bit cheeky and oh so cute. Just a head’s up, they also have them on ASOS for $40NZD here.

When you buy a sweet Autumn wardrobe, there’s only one thing to do… Show it off, of course.

I’m really excited to show you my Autumn Wardrobe, so here it is.

This outfit is super snuggly without looking casual in the slightest. These Glassons leggings are so thick I honestly think I could battle wind and rain and still come out strong. This Dotti blouse is extremely versatile, you’ll see me style it again below. This boohoo cardigan is warm and soft, with beautiful metallic detail. And these Hannah’s boots are the best if you have small calf muscles, since the material backing hugs.

This look is casual but romantic. Yeap, mix a deep red with cream lace and you’ve got a winner! I love supporting stores when possible, but I couldn’t go past this steal of a top on Ebay. It has quite a natural 70′s hippie look going with it and I think it could go well in a Summer wardrobe too (imagine denim shorts, this top and pretty waves in your hair – I’ve sold you on it, haven’t I), but let’s bring it back to Autumn and match it with warm items. These Glassons leggings are so snuggly, I had to pick up another pair; I know I’m going to rely on them for the super cold days ahead. These Hannah’s boots have been matched again and really bring out the ‘riding’ style they embody.

This is my ‘casual rockstar’ outfit. As you can see I have styled a white version of the Dotti Sasha shirt; I really don’t know how I lived without a white blouse. I love these shirts as they are so versatile… Roll down the sleeves and untuck with a high waist belt, and it’s a whole different look again. The Dotti supertubes are marvelous. I have been searching high and low for a leather look pant, and these are the ones of my dreams. Bear in mind they don’t give much stretch, so try a couple of sizes on.
This Glassons Bucket Bag is different and just my sort of thing. I like the ease of a bucket bag and have been using it comfortably for the past few weeks. Lastly, my blinging Hannahs boots. Oh these are bad ass! For one they look amazing – I have had so many compliments so far – but the thing I like the best is the sound, yes they make a jingle sound with every step, and yes it makes me feel like I’m in a western movie about to draw. Never fear if you prefer the quieter Ninja step, as I may stomp a little to make the sound better (it’s rewarding, alright?!)

This look is easy and carefree. Chuck a shirt underneath and slip on your fav pair of chucks or other high top shoes. The use of maroon on dark denim is really in for Autumn so layer up and enjoy.

This second outfit uses the same style blouse in a different way. Simply layer on top! For a real 90′s grunge look, grab a plaid flannel shirt and roll up the sleeves. This look is natural and great for Autumn with these shoes, but add some ankle boots or even jandals and you’re still achieving the same look.
